Diego has worked on the relationship between humanity and digital technology for over two decates. In 2007, he carried out one of the first pieces of research ever led about the impact of Facebook on social relations at the University of Cambridge. He is the author of Anesthestised. Humanity Under the Empire of Technology (2021) and Retaking Control. 50 Thoughts on our Digital Future (2024), both published in French and Spanish.
He is the promoter of OFF: A Manifesto, an initiative supported by hundreds of prominent figures from various fields, which highlights the critical point humanity is reaching in its relationship with digital technology and proposes a set of measures to regain control.
As a public speaker, he frecuently delivers conferences in think tanks, universities, schools, and other institutions, helping audiences to reflect critically about technology and the role of humans in a context of accelerated technological change. He is a member of the advisory board of the Instituto Hermes Foundation in Spain, which aim is to promote digital rights, and chairs its Impact Commission.
Diego Hidalgo has worked in very different fields. After serving at the Clinton Foundation in New York, he founded Amovens (Spain’s first ridesharing platform, with 2.5 million users today). The company diversified and started offering a unique combination of peer-to-peer mobility services, including car rental and leasing. In 2015, it was acquired by GoMore, the industry leader in Scandinavia. He has founded other companies such as Pontejos (rehabilitation of old buildings in Spain) and Ballensworth (a seed impact fund).
He is involved in various NGOs, was a founding trustee of United Way in Spain, and currently serves as a diplomat at the Embassy of the Sovereign Order of Malta in Morocco.
Diego is also a magician, speaks six languages, and received the Young Social Entrepreneurs Prize of 2012, awarded by the Youth Action Network / European University of Madrid. He was appointed as a Young European Leader by the German Global Bridges foundation.
Born in Paris in 1983, he holds a Master’s in Internation Relations from Sciences Po and an MPhil in Sociology from Cambridge University. He also studied at University College London (UCL) and the University of Bologna.
